About the Program
Join us on November 30 as John Goodnow, FACHE, CEO of Benefis Health System in Great Falls, MT, looks at Medicare Breakeven. His discussion will focus on why cost reduction is important and how Medicare Breakeven is strategically and tactically important to any organization. And, you’ll see the results speak for themselves in Benefis Health System’s long-term performance numbers.
Benefis Health System has an 18-year unbroken promise to its non-union employees that it doesn’t resort to layoffs and that they will receive a raise each year. While maintaining those promises during the Great Recession, and now through COVID, has been at times difficult, the true enabler of keeping those promises is Benefis’s long-standing cost discipline, which enables the organization to break-even, actually be profitable, on Medicare.
After embarking on a dedicated cost-reduction march in 2008, Benefis first achieved Medicare Breakeven in 2012 and has maintained it since. Despite a payor mix that is 75 percent governmental (Medicare, Medicaid, Indian Health Services, and Tri-Care/military), Benefis Health System has impressive and consistent financial results, again thanks to Medicare Breakeven.

The Leadership Series was created to bring to ACHE of Georgia members and guests the top national leaders in the field of healthcare to give us their insights into their careers, their organizations, and the decisions they made to get them to where they are today.
You’ll learn straight from the source how these top executives run their organizations and manage their success.
The format is one hour with 50 minutes of lecture and 10 minutes of Q&A. We are expecting to offer at least one session a month, and the schedule will depend on speaker availability. Our series qualifies for one hour of qualified continuing education credit with ACHE.

About Our Speaker
John Goodnow, FACHE, has more than 40 years of experience in hospital administration. Since 2002, Goodnow has served as CEO of Benefis Health System, a not-for-profit health system located in Great Falls, Montana. Benefis serves a quarter of Montana’s population across an expansive, rural region larger than Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont combined. Benefis is the largest private employer in Northcentral Montana.
During his time with Benefis, Goodnow has led the organization to consistent success and has achieved what few in healthcare have — Medicare breakeven, continuously since 2012. Goodnow has maintained a no-layoff and annual raise commitment to Benefis employees for his entire 18-year tenure at Benefis.
